Description
Top Crater from Etna North
Departures scheduled from Piano Provenzana at 8:00-8.30 am.
Planned ascent with off-road vehicles along the panoramic road on the north side of the volcano, up to an altitude of 2820 m. From this point the 5km ascent on foot on a path will begin, surrounded by bombs and volcanic waste for a total uphill difference in altitude of approximately 500 meters to the edge of the Central Crater of Etna, at an altitude of 3300 metres.
Once we arrive at the top of the Etna volcano, we will discover breathtaking views. We will walk along the edge of the large Central Crater where we will look at the active vents inside. We will also admire the famous South-East Crater, witness to the latest powerful eruptions. In addition to seeing these active summit craters, you will be able to admire a landscape of yellow and white sulphites, the gases it gives off and the solidified black lava that surrounds them. It’s an exciting experience that will leave you breathless!
After exploring the summit, the return trail will be a scenic journey through fine volcanic ash and scoria. You will enjoy breathtaking views of the Sicilian coast all along the route. Once we return to an altitude of approximately 2820 metres, we take the 4×4 bus back to Piano Provenzana.
